MEDIA CENTRE The Media Centre consists of a Library or Resource Centre on the first floor and an Audio Visual Centre with three viewing rooms on the ground floor below it. The Library houses a collection of over 16 000 items comprising both printed and audiovisual material. During the day the Library is available to class groups as well as individual students wishing to use the facilities for projects and homework. All Grade 8 and 9 classes have scheduled lesson time in the library in order to assist students with research skills, and with the selection of appropriate reading. Facilities in the library include an air-conditioned Computer Research area currently equipped with ten multimedia computers, a laser printer, a colour printer and a scanner. These computers allow Internet and e-mail access and are also licensed for Encarta 2002. The library catalogue is fully computerised and circulation control is via a digital scanner and individualised student ID tags with bar-coded library membership. The library utilises Papyrus library software, and is equipped with a further five student PC’s for catalogue enquiries. The Papyrus library system currently allows students not only to access information regarding material available in the library, but also contains hyperlinks to relevant Internet sites. In 2003 Hillcrest High School was awarded the ELITS Provincial Library Award for Excellence. This award was handed over at the International Conference for School Libraries held at the ICC in July 2003. In order to assist library users and maintain an orderly library, the Library makes use of trained Library Assistants. Library Assistants undergo a lengthy training process, and depending on their seniority, assist library users with anything from computer usage problems, to the recommendation of suitable research material. This service is recognised as an extra mural activity, and students dedicating themselves fully and effectively are able to receive appropriate recognition via the school's award system. |
