PEOPLE TO PEOPLE INTERNATIONAL HILLCREST HIGH SCHOOL STUDENT CHAPTER “Peace through Understanding”
Our People to People International Student Chapter at HHS has been running for a year and a half. The aim of this chapter is to create cultural understanding and promote peace and tolerance between people of all cultures, nations and backgrounds. In this time we have enjoyed participating in both local and international activities, and have promoted the motto of “Peace Through Understanding” in various ways.
Our achievements: - Kate Olivier, Taryn Malan and Nqobile Ndlovu attended 1st Africa/Middle East Regional Conference in Egypt in September 2008 - Nancy-Lee Williams attended Global Youth Forum in Denver, Colorado in November 2008 on full scholarship - Nancy-Lee Williams was interviewed on an Hungarian Radio Station about our Chapter activities - Taryn Malan and Mieneke van der Merwe attended the prestigious Peace Camp in Jordan in April 2009 - Kate Olivier, Taryn Malan, Laura Williams, Banele Ndaba and Miss van Eck attended the 2nd Regional Conference in Turkey in July 2009 - Saiyuri Pillay is attending the Global Youth Forum in Washington DC in November 2009 on full scholarship - Miss van Eck was selected as the best Adult Advisor of a Student Chapter globally in 2009 - Miss van Eck was selected to serve on the ‘One Region United’ Board Some of our activities that we have participated in include the following: helping out at Horizon Farm (organisation that helps mentally and physically disabled people) clearing up the paddocks, cutting alien invaders and doing crafts with the residents; we participated in the International Ocean Clean Up day and picked up approximately 55kgs of litter off Durban beaches; we corresponded with Polish email friends; participated in the Cancer Walk and donated R800; went ten pin bowling as a team building activity; gave out balloons at Founders Day; and four members attended a Youth Peace Forum. One of our continuous activities are Dance Workshops (‘cos we are all equal on the dance floor!) where we learn about different cultures through a dance medium. This year we did workshops on Cha Cha, Indian, Irish and Belly dancing where great fun was had! Another major event we participated in was International Peace Day. Combined with AfriTwin, we had a Peace Assembly at school, sold white peace ribbons, handed out peace stickers, and stuck peace quotes on the classroom doors. The whole school make Peace Pinwheels which we ‘planted’ in a peace sign on the school field. A special mention needs to go out to the Matric students, Nancy-Lee Williams, Taryn Malan, Kate Olivier and Mieneke van der Merwe for all that they have done in promoting the chapter, and showing initiative with our activities.
We look forward to participating in future Peace endeavours, and continuing with enthusiasm, the motto of People to People: ‘Peace through Understanding’.
