MULTISPORT / ADVENTURE RACING SERIES

All athletes wanting to participate in the KZN Inter-schools Adventure Racing (AR) series are required to participate in at least 3 out of the 4 Mudman series events as individuals in the half-distance events, with swimming (not canoeing) as their choice in the water event.  The Mudman series is a multisport event consisting of open water swimming (or canoeing), off-road cycling and cross-country running legs over a marked course. No navigation is required. The AR series is a team event, with each team of 4 having at least one girl (or one boy), and navigation is an important part of the event which consists mainly of off-road cycling and cross-country running, but may include several challenges as well. These challenges can include abseiling, climbing, raft-building, target shooting and other fun activities.

We cater for two types of AR teams:

1. Focus Teams - These consist of athletes for whom AR is their primary sport. As far as possible these teams have permanent members.

2. Cross-Training Teams - These  allow athletes from other sporting disciplines to participate in AR events, but since AR is not their primary sport these teams  do not necessarily have permamnent members and are made up of whoever is available at the time.

TRAINING PROGRAMME - TERM 2

DAY TIME DESCRIPTION
Mon 14h45-16h15 4 km or 6 km road run + climbing
Tue 14h45-16h15 4 km or 6 km road run + climbing
Wed 14h45-16h15 4 km or 6 km road run + climbing
Thu 14h45-16h15 4 km or 6 km road run + climbing

None of this training is compulsory. However, athletes should make every effort to attend at least one session per week. You will notice that the above programme includes running, swimming and climbing, but not mountain biking. Athletes are expected to do their own mountain bike (MTB) training, but we will offer group outrides from time to time.

Backpacking trips are also offered as a team-building exercise, and navigational skills (orienteering) - essential to adventure racing - will be taught on these weekend excursions as well. Please see Hiking for futher details.

TRAINING KIT

It is important for safety reasons that our pupils are recognisable as members of the school while off the school property doing running and cycling training. They also need to be recognisable when participating in multisport and adventure racing events. The kit needs to be comfortable, multi-functional (suitable for swimming, cycling, climbing and runng), durable and affordable. Please click here to download the kit list.
